Terminology
Forktongue
A person infected with the wyrm plague.
Homunculus
This refers to the many copies of Tibalt Kinderum. They were created to serve in his stead as the country's magus. How Tibalt Kinderum discovered this spell is confidential. What is known is that the process requires his soul to be copied over to the soul of another, making them identical (and overwriting the identity of the original host).

Homunculi have filled the ranks within the secret police and other positions close to the Protectorate.
Ikka
Translation for 'man.' Shorthand for 'child of Ikkurum,' as they were created by the second god Ikkurum.
Laws of Magic
Long ago, magic was abused by the ikka, so much so the gods have rewritten the laws of magic to punish them. Now only six magi can wield magic at one time, which can only be passed down to one apprentice.

These magi can only exist and perform magic within a certain domain marked by leylines. These leylines serve as a boundary for both the magus' body and spells. This prevents any chance of magical warfare from occurring again.

The laws of magic does not apply to anything older than the ikka or magitech left over from the previous age.

Leviathan
These seabeasts live deep in the trenches by sea vents. They have special chemosynthetic organs that convert chemicals released from the vents into sugars to feed their bodies. Their organ tissue contains large concentrations of these toxic chemicals (such as methane and sulfide) which can then be harvested and refined as fuel known as sea-oil.

Leviathans are hunted by specialized sailors known as reapers who catch them during their vertical migrations, rising to the surface to give birth.

(They are cousins to eels!)
Leyline
Veins of magic that act as the natural borders of a magus' domain of influence. Roughly every fifty years, the leylines shift, allowing apprentice magi to travel to their next domain.

These leylines form a massive rootlike network over the entire continent. They are full of raw magic and are usually not visible to the naked eye.

Magical warfare once fried a leyline between the countries of Pomolin and Shir, and has since served as a natural border between them. Laws of magic and reality all fail at this border, and no one has been able to cross it since.

All except for the forktongues.
Magus
Since the laws of magic have been enforced, only six official magi can exist at a time along with their given apprentices. Once the leylines shift, the apprentice inherits their master's magic and may pass on to the next domain.

Pale Magus of Time - Tibalt Kinderum, serving in Pomolin
Apprentice: Charlotte Kinderum

Loving Magus of Flesh and Bone - Yohlmaé Bledisow, serving in Shir

Zealous Magus of Fire - Alexander Festevey, serving in Kalkoku

Gentle Magus of Iron - Chém Ebonalf, serving in Mede

Wise Magus of Flora - Pinan Tdoh, serving in Obre

Mermaid
As God-Agura ferried the dead, he came to pity many girls who lived and died in great misfortune. He turned these girls into mermaids so they will not live in such tragedies again.

Mermaids swim through all waters and leylines. Seeing one is considered an omen that the god of death is coming.
Protectorate
The new government of Pomolin, founded after the abolition of their monarchy. It is lead by Executive Lord Protector Chares Pesh.
Quintessence / Sons of Nothos
A branch of the Serkin faith believe in the a fifth rebirth of Serka into the sympathetic and merciful Nothos.

His worshippers believe that he will save all ikka from the cruel system created by the four elder gods. This is the promised world.

Nothos is associated with the moon, dreams, prophecies and justice.

Sea-oil
A refined oil which replaced steam and coal as an energy source and rapidly revolutionised technology.

It is highly flammable in its raw form and one of the most valued resources traded over the seas.
Serkin faith
The gods are a paradox that cannot be understood by man. They are each a reincarnation of the other yet all exist at the same time.

Serka, the god of chaos - the first god; primordial and cosmic. Associated with circles, eternity, earth, planets and astronomy.

Ikkurum, the god of creation - the mother of man. Associated with childbirth, wine, food and love.
Agura, the god of death - he comes for all living things and ferries their souls to his domain deep in the oceans, trading them out with other souls to start new lives. Associated with the sea, mermaids, boats and sickness.

Darlgin, the god of war - the bold warrior who had also fathered two demigod sons. Associated with masculinity, strength, magic and weaponry.
Switchsword
The favoured weapon of the homunculi. It is a collapsible shortsword-firearm hybrid.

Those within the inner circle of the Protectorate all own one, but it is more ornamental due to how difficult it is to wield effectively.
Theater
The colloquial term for the Pomolish secret police. It is lead by Director Peter Vetiver.
Vulgar
The most common language in the continent.
Wyrm plague
Two years ago, people walked out of the Pomolin-Shir border, a strange wyrm infused to their chests. They were not all ikka anymore, having sharper nails and teeth, elliptical pupils, forked tongues and patches of scales. They immediately attacked the first people they saw, and the wyrm moved from the bite and onto the next victim.

This wyrm plague morphs any ikka it infects into a snakelike beast, known as forktongues.
